Banner Elk’s Best Ways to Stay Cool

It’s summer at Eagles Nest and we’re sharing our favorite local hot spots for keeping cool all season long. With Banner Elk’s mild summer temperatures averaging in the high 70s, it’s the perfect area to enjoy a fun day outdoors without overheating. Let’s take a look at our favorite family-friendly water activities located right here in the Eagles Nest area.

Enjoy VIP River Access

Amazing amenities are just one of the aspects that set Eagles Nest apart — and that includes our convenient River Club, right here on the property. Located along the banks of the famous Elk River, the River Club gives members exclusive access to various perks including 2,000 feet of private riverfront to one of the area’s coveted trophy trout fishing waterways, as well as access to the rustic River Lodge. It’s like having your very own body of water right in your backyard. It’s the perfect and most convenient way to keep cool and never have to leave the community.

Take a Dip at Elk River Falls

Less than a short 30-minute drive from Eagles Nest lies the impressive 50-ft Elk Falls. Take a dip in the expansive plunge pool or enjoy the area’s array of cascades and waterfalls. Don’t miss the relaxing beach areas below the falls!

While you’re in the area, it’s definitely worth exploring the Elk River Club for some catch-and-release fly fishing. Cool off in the pristine waters and reconnect with nature in this stunning atmosphere. Plus, club members will enjoy access to the renowned golf course, which offers an abundance of lakes and ponds perfect for younger anglers.

Try a Relaxing Tubing Trip

The nearby New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world. With water levels from 2 to 8 feet, it’s the perfect destination for the whole family. Swing by the Banner Elk Outpost at High Mountain Expeditions to explore tubing and rafting options on the river. About a 20-minute drive from Eagles Nest, this adventure makes for a convenient summer day trip!

If you can’t get enough of relaxing on the river, try tubing down the Toe River. Loafers Glory Rafting & Tubing offers exciting, scenic tubing trips down the Toe River designed for ages 4+. Plus, you’ll get insider tips on the local swimming hot spots to splash around in all summer long. This fun river adventure sits just about an hour’s drive from our community — and they even offer guided kayak trips if your family is feeling extra adventurous.

Rent Your Very Own Boat

Explore one of the many national parks in the area when you rent a boat or canoe at Julian Price Park. A short 30-mile drive, the 47-acre Price Lake is perfect for a day of boating on a warm summer day. Try Price Lake Boat Rentals for an array of boating options — and fun stand-up paddleboards, too.

Embark on a Whitewater Rafting Adventure

Opt for a high-adrenaline family trip at the famed destination known as Edge of the World. Enjoy a 3-4 hour whitewater trek along the scenic Watauga River and ride the Anaconda, the biggest rapid in the area, as many times as you’d like!
